What should I wear?
Please dress presentably. It doesn't need to be fancy, but it should be thought out! We want to imagine you in these roles and unless the character you want wears baggy oversized clothes, we don't recommend this type of outfit.
Am I just singing?
We want to hear you sing the songs, but also see you act the part! Think about how your body positioning would change with each character. How would your voice change? How would your thoughts behind each moment change? Bring these songs to life through story.
What if I am too scared to sing on my own?
If you are a new performer and you are scared to audition, just let us know! Once you are in the show, we have 3 months to work together on the material so we have a lot of time to work through your fears. If the idea of singing at your audition is too much, feel free to come in with other material. This might be a monologue or a scene, a dance or a funny joke! The first audition is our chance to meet you and get to know you a bit. If it seems like too much for you, we will do everything in our power to make you feel comfortable!
what If I'm not a good singer but I can act?
We have roles for everyone at Innovative Arts! If you are a beginner or a seasoned pro you will find that you are challenged and pushed just enough to help you grow so that you can shine on stage! If you aren't comfortable in a singing role, let us know! If you think that you would like to join us for a show but don't think you are a good enough dancer, ask us what roles you might be considered for! We can guarantee that as long as you are willing to try your best, we can find the perfect spot for you!
DO I NEED ANY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE?
We cater our program to students who are complete beginners as well as students who are seasoned pros! You don't have to have any experience to work with us as long as you love to perform and want to learn! We will find the role that best suits you and place you with a group of other students who will challenge and support you so that you can grow and learn with us and thrive at your final performance!
WHAT SHOULD I SING FOR THE AUDITIONS?
We have provided two song options for male students and two song options for female students on our website that we would like you to sing, but you are welcome to sing anything! We prefer to hear you sing musical theatre repertoire over a pop/indie song but if you are new to singing and auditioning then we just want you to sing something that you like and feel comfortable singing! If you don't have anything that you know well enough you are welcome to sing Happy Birthday or Oh Canada!
WHEN WILL I FIND OUT IF I AM IN THE SHOW?
The casting process takes a a bit of time! Usually you will find out 1-2 weeks after your callback but sometimes it takes us a little longer! We will send out an email when we begin calling everyone and offering them their roles and will do our best to keep you updated but sometimes it can take up to 3-4 weeks! We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding!
WILL I GET A CALLBACK?
Everyone gets a callback audition! The initial audition is a chance for us to meet you and get to know you! There is no way to fail your audition! Remember that we want to work with you and we want to see you succeed, so there is no reason to be nervous! Just be yourself!
I HAVE A FRIEND IN THE PROGRAM, WILL THEY BE IN MY CAST?
When you fill out your callback form you can request other performers to be in your cast with you! We do our best to try and make everyone happy but it is only a request so we can never guarantee anything! If this is a big deal breaker for you, please let us know but it may limit our casting options!
WILL I BE WITH OTHERS MY AGE?
The casts will be split so that half of the cast will be older students playing the adult roles and the other half are younger students playing the student roles. But the students who are playing the same type of role as you will be your age! Unless you specifically request to be with an older or younger group!
WHAT IF I CAN'T ATTEND ANY AUDITION DATES?
Feel free to email or call us and we will book you an audition time that works for you!
WHEN ARE REHEARSALS?
Rehearsals for Matilda begin the last week of August! In Oakville, we run rehearsals on Mondays and Wednesday for Company A and Tuesdays and Thursdays for Company B. In Toronto we run rehearsals on Mondays and Wednesdays!
HOW MANY PERFORMANCES ARE THERE?
Each cast gets one evening show and the opportunity to perform a matinee for a school group as a part of a special performing arts field trip that we arrange with your school! These two public performances take place after your technical rehearsal on stage with no audience. This is when you will get to combine all of the theatrical elements such as lights, sets, props, wireless microphones, backstage crew, and costumes together for the first time!
HOW BIG ARE THE CASTS?
We have small cast sizes so EVERYONE is on stage a lot and deeply involved in the show. Only 14 students in a cast. That said, we have multiple casts of different age groups.
I am 16, do I still have to sing the children section?
The medley was designed to show us specific areas of your voice, so although you would not be considered for a student character we would still love to hear you sing it so that we can hear that style in your voice! Think of it as your audition for the show "Charlie Brown" or the role of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" where even in professional productions the adults play children! If you are really uncomfortable singing these sections then feel free not to sing it and wait for the next piece.
What if I can't sing one of the songs in the medley?
TRY YOUR VERY BEST! If you need, you can try altering the melody so it stays in your range but if it's uncomfortable or painful just skip it, hum along, or our favourite, do a funny dance!
What if I want to be considered for the roles of the opposite medley?
You are welcome to learn both the male and female medleys if there is an ideal role that you want from the opposite medley! Let us know if you are planning to do this!
Do I need to dress up?
Please dress presentably, this can be jeans and a nice shirt, or a dress. It doesn't need to be fancy, but it should be thought out! We want to imagine you in these roles and unless the character you want wears baggy oversized clothes, we don't recommend this type of outfit. This is your opportunity to show us you looking your best!
WHAT IF I CAN'T ATTEND ANY OF THE AUDITION DATES?
Let us know and we will happily schedule you an audition time that works for you!
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF PRIORITY CASTING?
The benefit is that we get to see you first! With an empty cast list there are unlimited spots to fill and there is more flexibility for us to find the best spot for you! Plus auditioning earlier means that we are more likely able to address your specific requests such as ideal roles and requested cast mates!
WHEN ARE REHEARSALS?
We start rehearsals on September 3/4! In Oakville we run rehearsals on Monday and Wednesday for Company A, and Tuesday and Thursday for Company B! In Toronto we rehearse on Monday and Wednesday! Shows begin in November and we are all wrapped up before mid December!
Questions about Matilda
Is Trunchbull played by male or females?
All students are considered for all roles but we will definitely be looking for both male and female students to play this role!
If I am 13+ can I still play a student?
It is unlikely, but there is a chance that 13 year olds could play children. You will most likely be cast as an adult character. The same goes for students who are 13 and under! They will likely be cast as the children but there are a few who may be cast as adult roles! Anything can happen!
If a girl is cast as Michael will she be Matilda's sister instead of brother?
Michael will be mostly female students playing what is called a "trouser role". This is when a female plays a male! All female Michaels will still play Matilda's brother.
Are we split up by age?
Yes! Just like in previous shows like School of Rock and Sound of Music, half the cast will be older students playing the adult roles and the other half will be younger students playing the student characters!
ARE THERE ANY ROLES FOR OLDER STUDENTS?
There are so many great roles for our older performers! Matilda's parents, The Wormwoods, the mean and hilarious Ms. Trunchbull, the kind and sweet Ms. Honey, the stunning circus couple - The Acrobat and Escapologist, the lovely and warm Mrs. Phelps and more! Don't worry, the younger students get awesome songs like "Revolting Children" and "Miracle" but our older students get some more solo songs and scene work! Feel free to ask us about the adult roles that would best suit you!
CAN I BE MATILDA?
It seems everyone wants to be Matilda! Every show we have one role that everyone wants to play, usually because it is the title role! When we ask you what your ideal role is we find that usually 60% of our female students request the same role! Although we want to give everyone the role they desire there is no way to run a musical if everyone is playing the same part! Musical theatre is an art form all about storytelling and everyone has a valued place in the story! If you don't know the other characters in the show then don't hesitate to ask us as there are so many great parts that showcase each student's individual strengths and abilities! There are comedic roles, roles that show off dance ability, big belty roles, roles with beautiful melodic lines, roles that require beautiful physicality, roles that need a high energy performer and roles that need a soft performer! We promise that no matter the role, you will have a blast working with us and will be proud of what you present on stage! There is so much to do in this show, you could never be bored, and our teachers are dedicated to challenging everyone especially if a student asks to be pushed! We look forward to hearing everyone sing the material and to cast this awesome show!
